Alpha was pretty much boring, limited maps/modes not enough players and was still busy doing clan skrims and the like in Chiv. Since we dropped Chiv for Mordhau after release, much of the game is far superior to Chiv with the exception of some server browser issues, limited admin capabilities and of course no TO. While many of the clan have adopted well to the game, I am still very much on the struggle bus with the game even at Rank 70+, a majority of the time in Frontline. While I do very well in PUBs, I am having issues in the comp scene and skill levels. I even dropped off our A-team because I am more of a hinderance than helpful.

But I personally have been struggling with the game. Something about it, is not clicking with me. It could be the animations, the timings, weapon ranges or maybe it is me and my failing hand/eye coordination (gaming has never been the same since Lasik). The game is terrible unforgiving on a single mistake, misread, or poorly timed parry. I find many weapons are getting 1-2 free hits on me. I seem to weapon cancel on map terrain/objects while my enemy swing thru it. I can hit players but rarely flinch them but I get flinched all the damn time. Projectiles fucking love me as I can be fully surrounded by enemies and I am the only one killed by they following: team mate archer. catapult, ballista, throwing axe, Jav, firepot, teammate on horse, etc. Seriously, time and time again I will be the only one killed while being surrounded. The game hates me. I also seem to have a large majorities of my stabs completely fail to hit their mark as well as 60% of my parries fail both of course are probably tied to the massive stamina drains from the never ending missed attacks. It is a wonder how I can consistantly top frag on pub servers but that could be because I am an objective whore and mostly play Frontline. So for me personally, this game pisses me off more than Chivalry archer fags one shotting me from range.

I was never a fan of dueling in Chiv and hate it even more in Mordhau, yet I force myself to do it. I am horrible at dueling. I would much rather fight 1 v X any day. But we, the clan, keep pretty busy with in the clan and we have a |ĶiĻă| Initiate Training program to teach noobs in the game, how to get better and the in and outs of competitive play. Sadly the "comp scene" is being ran by a handful of old Chiv players. They are making the same mistakes they did in Chiv, making up the rules, limiting comp size, limiting maps, weapons, in game assets and dumbing it down to 5v5-7v7(if you are lucky). Basically doing the same stupid shit they did in Chiv that divided the elites from the public. But the biggest problem is that they have little to no outreach or training. Few if any have a training program to get players interested in competitive play. Hell, most normie Mordhau players have no idea there is even any organized play let alone competitive tournaments, skrims and pugs minus what they might find by yet again a handful of YouTubers. Normies have no idea how to even get into the comp scene, nor do they know what is expected.

Normies tend to hop in and get stomped by the comp players but that is pretty much expected in any game. There are a handful of troll players but I think there are more whiners than there are tolls. If you are getting offended by what morons are saying in chat, you are not playing the game. I rarely if ever read the chat as I am too busy playing and in our discord shooting the shit. But I will say that there is a lot of stupid/ignorant players in the game that just have no clue as to what they are doing, what should be done to win a game along with a huge dose of autism where players are fighting over catapults and horses and stupid shit like that.

BTW how do you break a map like Crossroads by "improving" it? It was at least playable before but nerfing the radius of the Mortor that was barely used as it was. is just stupid and makes it completely useless. Creating a choke point that was designed as spawn protection ends up being a killing field run = genius. I cannot wait for the SDK to be released as I could care less about ranked dueling but that is just me.

Last week, I pretty much took a break from actually playing the game, still did clan stuff as managing a clan our size and age can be a big job. While our A team is very solid, our B team is really getting stronger and our C team is learning, I have limited my comp play as the game just isnt doing it for me or me for it.!

... they didn't even test Frontline, Battle Royale, or Horde mode, during the entire 2 years of alpha? And they think using the full release as a test for these modes isn't going to have a major affect on player retention?

I don't see the players as the problem with the comp scene getting no attention. It's kind of fucked up that they devs haven't done one single thing to promote it at all, they don't even publicly acknowledge the current scenes existence really. In fact didn't they say something like "if it happens we will support it" but it has already happened lol, and this statement might as well be a denial of its current existence.
The comp scene is what this game is built off of, so incorporating that into the game would maybe have been smart? Directing people towards already organized communities that will train nubs, instead of a video that doesn't actually help them?

The thing is, crossroads uses the frontline code in order to play. It should have been a separate KOTH gamemode but the devs haven’t split it up as it’s an early build of koth. Once a dedicated KOTH Mode comes out only then will crossroads follow.

The maps layout would make sense for KotH but the maps second main "feature", the horses, would be even more antithetical to the game mode. For KotH the horses shouldn't even be there and the playable area should be dramatically decreased (assuming the "Hill" was the same size as the control point of course).

Shit, he's realized that crossroads doesnt make sense no matter how you look at it.

Hey guys, just a heads up. If you are looking to buy one of these, just be aware none of them have patterns or metal trim options. What you see is what you get. I bought mine thinking it would have patterns, and it doesn't. Came as a total surprise, so on the off chance this post helps someone avoid dropping a huge chunk of money on something they won't like, then I figured I should make it.

I hope this helps someone.
Cheers

Played just a bit around alpha release and put it down till release. I have about 175 hours I think. Right now I'm like most people where the MUST GET HOME AND PLAY urge is gone, but if I click the icon and play I'll be in for a bit. I enjoy the mechanics and working on things a lot and trying to get better, but ultimately I think I'd like a few additional game modes.

I really want to be able to participate in small team skirmishes. Regular skermish isn't my deal, I need to maximize playtime and people hiding or just screwing up early is enough to make me go find another server. TDM's end too fast but are pretty fun when they are around 8v8ish.

Dueling is good still but dependent on who is on, and usually I'm worried I'm boring people by getting farmed. Ranked will be good here because they'll enjoy farming me for rank points so there's that.

Frontline is still fun, it is dependent on how many horses/archers/firepot people are online though. I do wish the maps had a nicer flow to them, while they provide some good balanced fights from time to time, they don't really have peak moments, they just sort of ebb and flow on their own.

I'll frontline by default and go around the edges of the map to goof around and try to learn mechanics better. On days I'm more awake will be in dueling. Starting to look at other games to play though.

Overall I think what would most excite me is getting the ability to 3v3 / 5v5 with a match maker. I just am no good at networking or being able to commit to time/places so unfortunately need the computer to solve it for me. I'd like to try these game modes out a lot, honestly since m&b I've wanted to try 3v3 / small team melee gameplay.

Second would be waiting for a frontline rework, though overall I'm sort of happy with frontline. The maps I like the most in frontline are usually ones where I can get off to the side action. Grad I love to fight around the horse barn thing through the back of the house by the catapult. Usually all the spam is between the two spawns and on the side I can get mixed XvX melee fights.

Horses I sort of hate. I've thought about making a post about it but I'd summarize the issue as the flinching speed needs to be raised, more things need to slow them down, and overall it's too hard to defend against them. In m&b you just downblock or dodge into the horse head if they are couching, which you can't seem to do here. If you block the couch your weapon goes off into the grass somewhere and I lose it all the time. All in all they are frustrating without much exciting counter play.

No.

I haven't played in close to a month, almost all team modes are ruined by fire/horses/shields/trolls and a bunch of other easily avoidable poor decisions, on top of not being very fun to begin with (mostly Frontline), so I have no interest in playing them in such state, as I'm not a masochist.

Duels were kinda alright, but they also have issues and I figured it's not enough for me to keep playing this game.

I'm going to wait and see what these new gamemodes bring to the table.

Not really atm.

The devs really need to step into the shoes of a pub player and realize that the game isn't all that fun for them right now. It's quite clear they spent too much time on certain aspects of the game and forgot to test important stuff like maps/horses etc.

Catering to the chiv community can only get you so far, and if your goal is to play with the same people once again for 5 more years instead of growing the game continue on this path you are treading.

I barely played in alpha+beta (only like 50-60 hours) because there was no proper gamemode and because there were certain design choices in the combat that I didn't like. After release I played quite a lot but the problems that I had with the game are still present so I'm losing interest again.

I am currently burned out as Front line is a mess and all maps besides camp seem to be badly designed. I can only do duels and scrims on occasion because of said bad maps. I also have issues with 1vX so scrims only get me so far before I get annoyed that's it's just 1v1s with switching. For me to get passion back I need WAY better maps and a sound/atmosphere overhaul.

I got it on release, no experience with other first person melee games, but it looked really fun. I apparently had Chivalry in my account, but never played it - must have gotten it in a bundle or something

After around 180 hours of playtime now, I both enjoy & hate the game at the same time, which is down to a combination of:

  • my shitty spanish internet & the lack of being able to find a server where I actually have decent ping/latency
  • trolls/memers/toxic people in chat (I've hidden the chat, kill feed, target info, killed by etc so I don't get triggered)
  • same as the latter, but idiots that don't play the objective or run in swinging their zweihanders left & right without a care of who they kill - if you are going to play frontlines then at least use overhead/underarm/thrust attacks when wading in to help team mates, or if it's the other way around & you see someone in a 1vX & they are swinging their weapon around wildly then it's your own fault if you get decapitated if you decide to go & help them)
  • the one sided-ness of most matches
  • crossroads (piss poor design & spawn points)
  • mountain peak (horses don't belong on that map)
  • horses in general (getting tired of being trampled/skewered by someone on a horse within 10 seconds of spawning in)
  • mauls (my personal most hated weapon/player to fight against - those damn one shot kills)
  • random fps drops on 64 player servers (hard to find lower max player servers on account of the server list never working properly - often have to refresh about 10x or more to find a server I want to play on. I like 32 player servers as it's less chaotic
  • probably a bunch of other things...

Other than those things, the game can be really fun. Graphics are decent. Animations look good for the most part (except when you encounter the ex chiv apache attack helicopters/ballerina players that move around really erratically). Sounds need a bit of work as they are inconsistent - I would also love to have an independent speech volume slider so I can turn down the voice overs or mute them entirely as it's very frustrating when you encounter those players that constantly spam voice lines non-stop throughout the match (probably via a macro). Optimization isn't as bad as I expected, but suffers random fps drops on 64 player servers & any server when firebombs are used.

I like duels mode - even though I suck at them. I often die, but shit happens. Really looking forward to the official 1v1 duel mode where you will 100% be able to focus on your enemy & not be distracted by other players or have to keep an eye out for some bob the builder troll or ffa muppet.

I'm starting to get a bit burned out but then again that's often the case with any game you play too much of in one go. I do think this is the sort of game that's probably best played in small doses, a few matches here & there - at least until there's more modes/content, because there's only so many times you can play the same map.

 Deadmode

No chiv experience and no alpha/beta playtime - purely here since release. 200 hours in.

Still loving the game and finding a huge draw to play it, albeit the initial honeymoon attraction has faded. There are things that annoy me, such as some unreadable animations and a lack of a decent set of gamemodes and comp systems, but those will come.

If I get 'burnt out', it's usually because I'm not in the best frame of mind and get frustrated too quickly if I have a bad session. Not really anything to do with the game itself.

Impressed with the quality of the game considering the development time and team size involved. Looking forward to seeing what happens in the year following such a successful launch.

Few years in Alpha and "beta" later

Are you enjoying the game?

Do you still feel an urge to play it?

After playing it due to that urge, do you play it for long? do you get burnt out quickly?

If you get burnt out, why do you think that is?

If you don't, why do you think that is?

I've noticed this games distinct lack of blunt weapons (that aren't meme weapons) compared to blades and also the lack of 9-point weapons.

Oh what's this?

pole.png

It would have slightly less damage than the evening star but makes up for it in range and stab ability.

Something needs to be changed for Spear. The damage, reach and deceptively quick speed this weapon has is really frustrating. It has double the reach of a rapier and much more damage while also remaining fairly fast. Please look in to reworking the damage of the stab attacks or make this spear attack slower for stabs. You can slightly boost Spear Swing (non-alt) in exchange.

Are you guys fighting the same spear as me? as long as they aren't a day 1 noob they can just poke insanely fast and you can't switch to them. No punishment for playing the weapon unless all of your team die and it's just you. Don't even need to read feints half the time.

In an objective based game mode a maps design should be based around guiding players toward the objectives both in lay out and in general advantage offered by completing them. All the features in an objective map should contribute in some way toward the objectives for the side controlling them. Most of Mordhau's FL maps struggle with these things but Crossroads in particular fails at pretty much all of them.

Winning the map is decided by taking the control point. The rate at which this depletes the opposing sides tickets is substantial enough that you can't compensate for it just by having more kills elsewhere. As such the only things on the map that matter in terms of winning are things that contribute to taking this position.

Crossroads has two big "features" that were considered stand-out enough to be highlighted in it's patches lead up promotion; The large number of horses available and the mortar emplacement. I've never seen the mortar matter at all.. in fact I don't think I've ever even been or seen a kill from it. I'm sure it's happened but it's so rare as to be pretty much meaningless and, given that, it effectively contributes nothing to winning the map. The mortar is so inconsequential it's actually dramatically less useful than the ballista all the way at the blue base.

The horses on the other hand I see used all the time.. but they not only contribute nothing to actually winning or holding the objective; They hurt your own team. Even with the revised spawns neither side has to be in the open low ground long enough for horses to have any significant impact, even if the other side had all of them. One team having so much Cav only means that side has a dozen or so fewer bodies fighting for or defending the center circle. You can run straight to the center from either spawn and you might get killed once or twice by a horse over the course of the entire match.. maybe. Thing is there's no way to fix this without dramatically altering the map as forcing foot soldiers to run exposed long enough for the horses to matter would only make the on-foot experience incredibly unfun; Both because you're basically making people be near-free kills for horse riders and because you are forcing the on-foot people to endure a lot of unnecessary down time just running back to the fight every respawn. If horses were to be a central element of the map then the map should have been built around separate engagement areas with at least two objectives; One achievable by on foot players, the other requiring Cavalry and segregating the two in some manner. You could also make one impact the other, for instance by having the on-foot objective be trying to take the mortar which could then be used to influence the cav battle.

As things are however the maps two big "features" are either completely irrelevant to the game mode.. or actively hurt the side using them. It also means that on this large multilevel map.. the vast majority of the available play space is utterly meaningless. The only spot anyone should be fighting on FL Crossroads, if they want to win, is the center circle with the occasional trip to kill the infinite ballista spammer in the nearby guard tower with an ammo box. That's about as awful as map design can get when it's game mode is considered.

The map itself is.. fine.. for TDK and Deathmatch. With no objective beyond "kill things" the maps issues aren't really that big of a deal (though the mortar is still pretty sad) and that's where this map should be available. Without a major overhaul however the map should simply not be in the FL rotation.
