I spent some quality time with the FPS counter in Taiga today to determine exactly which graphics settings are causing the performance issues some of us are having, and discovered two interesting things.

Hardware: 970 GTX & i7 3770 with 16 GB of RAM.

Goal: Stable 60 FPS (vsync) with 32 bots on the map, while recording with OBS at 2500 bitrate.

I started off with all graphics options either disabled or at their lowest, and increased or enabled them one by one until I noticed an impact on performance. I ended up achieving a stable 60 FPS with all settings at maximum with the following exceptions:

Shadows reduced to High:
In normal situations, there isn't an impact on Ultra, however some areas in Taiga have particularly complicated shadows and this will drop frames to 55 FPS on their own. Ultra shadows also have trouble with Smoke Bombs, where frames drop into the 40s in some situations.

Effects reduced to High:
In normal situations there are no performance hits with effects on Ultra; however, when entering into areas that have high usage of effects, such as the campfires, frame rates drop into the 40s temporarily and then recover.

Ambient Occlusion Disabled:
In most maps, Ambient Occlusion is only used in corners of walls and such and doesn't have a big impact. However; on Taiga, Ambient Occlusion is applied to all the complex intersecting geometry of the trees, and that has a very large performance hit. I imagine the developers could solve this by disabling Ambient Occlusion on tree leaves.

Boy horses should get, umm, distracted when the other side has girl horses. For historical accuracy.

It's almost perfect. Great job devs.

Couple things that make it unbalanced:

Bots with projectiles. There is a fuck load of them, they have perfect aim, and the projectiles do full damage, so one dude with throwing knives kills you in two hits.

Health on kills is nice but you can heal yourself to full very easily.

Here's my experience trying to play Battle Royale:

Join a server, there is only one other person. Wander around for 10 minutes "waiting for players" and nobody joins. Quit, join a matchmaking game, but this one has already started. See a bunch of people leave, realize they're going to start a new round. Quit, join a matchmaking game, and get to that next game a few seconds too late, it already started.

Join matchmaking a few more times until finally it looks like I've got in before it starts and people are joining. About 5 minutes later, it starts. Run to a chest, pick up a rusty arming sword, turn around to fight some other guy who already has armor, shield, and a short spear, but I kill him anyway. Can't pick up the loot because it got swallowed up by the black circle. Wander a little further in and get annihilated by a guy in full plate and a zweilhander.

Quit, join matchmaking, luck out and get into a game before the timer ran out. Spawn in a field with only one building in sight. Run to it, but someone else beats me to the chest. I got a few punches in but he picked up a quarterstaff and beat me to death with it.

Couple more rounds of matchmaking. Okay, I spawned in, there's a chest and nobody else is going for it. I sprint to it, open it up, and pick up a recurve bow. I turn around and get a dagger thrown right into my face, instant kill.

Another half hour of attempting to get into a game. One server looked like it might get started. Spent 10 minutes waiting on that one. Eventually everyone left. Hold the phone, I joined another and its up to 8 players. Holy shit its starting. Only a couple people joined this one so I got to a few chests before running into anyone. Pole axe equipped, got a kill. Went into a house, got into a tight situation, two more kills, got a halberd now. Game is starting to lag hard. Took an x-bow shot to the chest but managed to win the fight. 4 survivors left. Came up behind two people working together, no helmet, should be an easy kill. Feels like I'm running 10 fps at this point, my swing misses, get pinned, and get killed.

So, TL:DR; I spent a couple hours being frustrated as fuck to play one semi-enjoyable round of Battle Royale. If I had just bought this game on Steam, I would request a refund immediately.

Best solution: Delete Battle Royale. It's a shit game mode and it's very poorly implemented here.

Okay solution: Shelve it until a year after release, when the community is established and you've had time to work on it. A dedicated matchmaking lobby that groups players up BEFORE sending them to a server would be ideal.

Unacceptable Solution: Go to release with Battle Royale as-is. Everyone who tries it will request a refund, I fucking guarantee it.

Played one more round: Couple people spawn near me but there's a chest. It's calling out to me. This is my chest, there are many like it, but this one is mine. BROKEN ARMING SWORD. Get murdered by a guy with a bastard sword, kite shield, and chain armor.

Fuck it, one more round: Spawn near the dungeon. Oh lots of chests. THEY'RE JUST DECORATION. Fuck me.

Whatever you do, don't add a reporting feature. You'd have to automate it and people will abuse the fuck out of it.

And I just spent 200 gold on the EPIC CHEST and got a 10 gold bear trap. FUCK.

I've been playing some local matches against bots because Battle Royale sucks, all I wanted was Horde, and I wanted to see the extent of the AI changes that were made at least in part to support the tutorial.

TL:DR: holy shit bots are much better.

Old bots ran around mindlessly until a player was in range, then ran straight to them and attacked at the earliest possibility, either a stab or a horizontal slash. They had perfect parry timing, and would occasionally chamber or feint. They had no problem going into the other team's spawn and dying after 5 seconds. They were totally retarded about heights.

New bots still run around mindlessly. They still go into your spawn. They still won't climb up anything but at least know how to use the stairs now.

New behaviors:

Matrixing - Swing for the head and bots will occasionally crouch down and avoid the swing. It's funny to see this happen when you attack from behind. I've also seen one lean back to avoid a strike.

Running Away - Fought against a bot with a dagger and he would turn around and sprint away to dodge my attack.

Dragging - Fought against a bot with a heavy weapon and it seemed like he was dragging his attacks.

Attacks from other angles - Bots now have upper and lower strike bound.

Throwables - Bots will use throwable items. They have very good aim.

Bows/Crossbows - Bots aim quickly and well, and have perfect timing with switching to a melee weapon when you approach.

Not having perfect defense - Bots ability to parry correctly has been toned down so much it's almost comical. Honestly, they could stand to defend themselves a little better.

Moving around - Bots now circle around you instead of just standing there.

Also those shield guys are impossible to 1v1, they block everything

To further improve bots, I think the devs should create three separate AI profiles:

Noob AI: Shitty parrying and not reading feints or morphs, basically the same as bots are now. Slow to fire and poor aim with projectiles. Occasional stab chamber, no slashes. No ducking or dodging.

Experienced AI: Solid parrying and okay feint/morph reading. Decent fire rate and aim. Will initiate and return chambers. Improved aim and fire rate. No leaning or ducking but will step back or to the side to avoid a strike.

Seymour AI: Almost impenetrable parry, very good chambering, full matrixing, and fires bows and projectiles like the current AI.

Also, when you do fix it, can you give XP for things that actually matter, like kills and assists, and not just camping in spawn and missing shots with a longbow?

While we're at it, let's deduct XP for team hits.

Also kicks from idle if you die and your team takes a while. Not cool bro. And because it's matchmaking I can't just go back to the server...

That beach where bodies catapult into the sky is and will always be my all-time favorite bug. I would like to think they left it in to be funny, but in reality they just don't care enough to fix it.
