It's almost here folks, and yes, that's 2017, we're not delaying it by another year. We will unlock Steam keys tomorrow by the specified time, which will then appear in your forum account, and you'll then be able to activate them on Steam. If you haven't activated your purchase on our forums yet, go ahead and do that (we've sent out emails with the activation link some time ago!)

We can't wait to have you guys get your hands on what we've been working on (and what you've been waiting) for so long. See you guys tomorrow!

PS: regarding the recent outbursts on the forums.

The situation on the forums has been, well, rather tense the past few days. We made some decisions that clearly riled parts of the community up. If we were to do it again, we'd have handled it differently for sure. We've been working day and night to make sure everything in the alpha is working correctly, and that it has as much content as we can reasonably put into it at this point.

If you've been following us for a while, you know we tend to obsess over details and nothing is ever good enough. This remains true even for an alpha, and will remain true in the future. It's simply how we operate as a team. Unfortunately, everything has its downsides, and it sometimes costs us foresight when it comes to other aspects, like keeping you informed of our on-the-spot decisions, or being able to stay true to deadlines. That said, we think you'll love it. And ultimately, that's really why I think we're all here. Thanks for your patience and support, we'd never have made it without you.

We've been busy! Work is progressing towards our Alpha milestone, which means getting critical bugs sorted out, putting UI in place, and deciding which content will make the initial cut. Along with this, we're also taking care of some optimization to make sure we get rid of any nasty framerate spikes during gameplay and that we're able to hit stable framerates in battles of various sizes. Being a melee game with a reliance on timing, the input has to be really tight, and there's not much room for framerate dips. Being a graphically intensive game on top of this can make things quite challenging.

We leverage level of detail (LOD) functionality heavily to this end. The simplest of its kind is a reduction in polygons as characters move further away from the screen, like in the example below.

1 (2).jpg

This reduces some load on the GPU, but doesn't do much when the CPU is struggling, so we have to resort to many other tricks. For example, a big culprit are our characters because they are comprised of many different parts, each part requiring their own texture. If you add up all the gloves, arms, shoulders, chests, helmets, coifs, skirts, legs and boots that a character can wear at any time, you end up with a staggering number of parts. These make each character truly unique, but are also quite expensive for the CPU when it has to tell the GPU to draw them. To alleviate this, when characters are far away and when this sleight of hand is not noticeable, we switch to a different construction that is very efficient for the CPU to pass around, and it looks a bit like this:

2 (2).jpg

We're also adding other optimizations on the CPU side of things, and letting players really lower the CPU load. One drastic measure we're taking is that we allow CPU code to run at a lower FPS for content that is further away from the player. This is typically done in games for animation, which ranks among the most expensive, but we generalize this approach and use it across the board. When this setting is cranked to extreme levels, it can have the effect of watching something in the distance in stop motion, but it can help lower-end rigs run the game at a reasonable framerate, and it does wonders for when you have lots of characters on the screen fighting.

However, work continues on other aspects of the game, too. More and more wearable items are being added to the game, check out the character below and see if you can spot some never-before seen gear!

3 (2).jpg

And last, but not least, more map environments. We're trying to make some new, pleasant environments for you to murder each other in. Here's a shot of some more recent work, it's one of the larger maps containing among other things, a fort and a mine. Take a look!

This month's update contains shots of some juicy new gear!
imgur album

First one of the bunch is the bill polearm category, made out of 2 parts with 3 choices for each (head and handle).

Our first alternate skin for a weapon category is the norse sword skin for the arming sword. A skin is simply an alternate set of parts for a weapon category. Alternate skins have no gameplay effect, and are just for looks. The parts can't be mixed with other skins, allowing us to restrict the combinations to something tasteful, i.e. the end result still looking like a viking sword.

More armors are making their way into the game, including a fancy, flashy landsknecht set. This outfit offers light protection, but good mobility.

And of course, more helmets, because there's never enough of those!

A knight sporting one of the new helmets, the bill, a brand new brigandine & a pair of new shoulderpads:

A new breastplate worn with other gear.

Until next month :)

August is fast approaching and with it, the alpha testing for Mordhau is getting ever closer. In this month's update, we'll show off some recent additions to the gear, as well as an idea of what to expect from the alpha, and when to expect it.

Check out the album of this update's in-game shots here!

An alternate skin set for the greatsword that is themed on the Scottish claymore has been added. More armor pieces, including gloves, pauldrons, and a set of lamellar armor has made its way into the game. With each added piece, the combinations possible become more and more varied. We have over 150 different pieces of wearable gear in the game already!

The alpha will begin with a focus purely on smaller scale melee combat, with modes such as Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Last Team Standing, and will also include expansive character customization. As the alpha goes on over the following months, we will start including more content such as ranged combat, vehicles (including horses) and bigger modes. We decided this was the way to go for several reasons, one being that it focuses players on testing what we feel we can use feedback on. The second being that it allows us to polish up remaining content before it is added for testing.

So, when? We're aiming for end of August, if all goes according to plan. Sometimes delays are inevitable because things can break spectacularly at the last minute, but hopefully that won't be the case. We'll keep you updated should the situation change.

Mordhau's store page is now listed on Steam!
We've been hard at work wrapping things up for release the past several months, fixing any outstanding bugs and adding the necessary polish and content where needed. This work will continue leading up to release in Q2 2019, which we estimate we will hit somewhere in April (early if all goes to plan). A glance over the Steam page should give you a hint of what to expect on release, but I will elaborate a little more here. We'll be releasing with 3 new modes that we expect to be the main attraction.

Frontline: a flag-capturing conquest-like mode played on large maps with horses, siege engines and chaos all-around. Goal is to capture the enemy's flags in linear order while defending your own, and culminates with an objective to complete in the enemy's base.

Battle Royale: start out with fists on one of our maps, haunted by a circle constantly creeping ever closer. Find loot & armor in chests (or on other players) to deck yourself out and manage your health with scavenged bandages instead of regeneration.

Horde: coop mode to play with friends against waves of AI, where you can purchase equipment & armor in your base obtained from clearing out the more and more difficult waves.

And of course, all the modes we have so far: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch & the round-based single-life Skirmish mode. We've been working on polishing plenty of stuff such as the AI, the UI, adding unlocks and achievements, tracking skill based on kills/deaths to be able to put players into appropriate servers, improving performance, etc. We also now have a fun tutorial for new players that they can play through to familiarize themselves with the game. Throughout all this time work continued on map work, which led to various reworks and expansions of current maps like Grad and Camp and the introduction of Taiga. We have some maps still in the pipeline and close to completion, but we won't hold the release back if those are not finished, meaning they might come shortly after release.

Finally, there's some things that didn't make it for various reasons and we decided are not worth holding back a release for. Among the Kickstarter stretch goals that won't make it on release are ranked competitive 1v1 matchmaking and the SDK. We will focus on these post-launch. Another feature that won't be there are female characters, as we simply didn't have time to do these justice, so we will be looking at the introduction of the gender option after release.

There's also some Kickstarter rewards we need to wrap up, and we will be sorting these out before release as we go.

We'll be keeping in touch!

With September just around the corner, we unfortunately have to announce a short delay in getting the alpha out to you all. This one's not going to be long, it's one to a maximum of two weeks into September. We simply couldn't get everything done in time to hit August. These weeks before launch are incredibly hectic and sometimes there's just not enough hours in a day (or week, or month). Given that there's over 3000 of you (both scary and exciting), we want to make sure things work properly.

At Alpha launch, you'll be able to play on these 4 maps: Camp, Grad, Pit and Ruins. There are more maps that will be added during the Alpha period, but these were our most polished, so we decided to include them first. Check them out below:

More weapons and armors are being added to the game constantly, check out these two-handed maces that you'll be able to wield soon:

Stay tuned, won't be long now!

Attention all backers!

NOTE: This is a closed test for Kickstarter backers only. Access to the game is otherwise not possible at the moment, but release is coming soon!

As we approach towards having everything ready for release, we need your help to do some stress testing and identifying any show-stopping issues. Starting on March 15th (Friday) at 5 PM CET (Central European Time), until (including) March 17th (Sunday), we will be running organized tests on the pre-release build, where you'll get a taste of what we've been working on.

This time around, we really need to hit high player counts, so we are going to be limiting the servers to guide the testing phase. We will be doing themed tests each day to focus the population, starting with Friday - Frontline on Camp, Saturday - Battle Royale on Grad, and ending with Sunday - Horde on Taiga. Outside of these dates, the new modes will not be available to play. We are doing this to ensure that all those who wish to try them out show up on the days mentioned, ensuring a high peak. During the testing we will have servers in EU, US, AUS and SA.

After the weekend testing period, we will be rolling back the game to the current test build which will remain up until closer to release. Assuming there are no major issues, we will then proceed with our preparations for release and will announce an exact date shortly after. Good times are coming.

(Sneak peak below of the new armory poses :))

It's here! The purpose of this Alpha is to ensure the stability of the game and its server infrastructure, as well as testing the functionality and synergies between all the game mechanics. Balancing is not a big concern to us at the moment and will be addressed once we have finalized our proficiency and perk system, which will follow in a future update, along with other features that we're currently holding back while they're being worked on. Please keep in mind that this is an early alpha version of the game, bugs and broken things are to be expected.

To compensate for the lack of an ingame tutorial in this early stage, it's highly recommended that you read carefully through the controls menu and try things out in a local match before jumping into multiplayer -- there are some extremely skilled players with thousands of hours in melee games who are eager to fight and won't hold back.

Also, check out this great tutorial made by community member Jax:

Wow! You guys absolutely smashed it! What a finish, with nearly $300K raised of the initial $80K goal. We're blown away by the support you've shown us, and we can't wait to get the game out to you all.

Thank you !

Okay, so we messed up, and forgot we mentioned the titles were exclusive to Kickstarter backers :( To fix this, we're changing the webshop titles to Recruit / Militia / Mercenary (vs the KS ones that were Conscript / Sellsword / Knight). If you prepurchased on our webshop and feel cheated by this change, you can request a refund by mailing us at [email protected] and we'll sort it out.

Do note that due to how the titles work, if you purchased via the shop and picked e.g. the Knight title on the forums, it will stay until you try to change it, at which point you'll see the new titles rather than the Kickstarter ones (and won't be able to go back).

What a ride! The day of Mordhau's release is finally here. Our target is to go live today April 29th @ 10 AM PDT. We will be launching with a base price of $29.99 (Steam currency/regional pricing applies!) and a 10% launch discount. Besides the base game, for those who really want to go the extra mile to support us, you'll also be able to purchase the Supporter Pack containing the soundtrack, Medallion (necklace) wearable cosmetic and Mercenary banner. Those who wish to purchase the Steam key to the game on our webshop, will be able to do so here when the game is released, and a lot more money from those sales will go to the developers, as Steam won't take their cut.

Anyone who backed the game at $40 or more (Beta level, which contained the Soundtrack) will receive the Supporter Pack as part of their pledge via Steam key on the account you've registered on our website. So please keep this in mind to avoid purchasing the Supporter Pack twice! Please give us an extra couple of days to supply these Supporter Pack keys to you, as we ran into some delays there.

All backers should have received their rewards by now (except the soundtrack). For some of you, we're still waiting/adding the things that require your input (custom emblems, etc.) so make sure to fill out all forms on our website. If you have not yet received a key please do the following before contacting us. Check your emails, most of you that contact us have already activated your purchase back in 2017, but have not checked your forum account for the Steam keys. The keys have been waiting for you there for some time :) If you are sure you haven't received any activation link, and have never activated your purchase on our forum/website, then get in touch with us via a Kickstarter private message, or send an email to [email protected] from the email you used to purchase, and we will sort you out.

If you would like to purchase just the soundtrack (and it's a good one!) directly from the composers, you can do that here.

Thank you so much for supporting us and making this project possible. It's been an absolute blast to work on, and we hope you'll enjoy playing it!

See you on the battlefield!

It's taken us a bit longer than we anticipated, but the third developer blog is finally here! This time we're showing off the vast customization options that the player has available in Mordhau. Check out the video below:

Unrelated to the devblog, we've also been cleaning up the forums a bit for the past month. You may have noticed some filler posts getting deleted to make topics more readable. Please keep things tidy in the regular forums, use Off Topic for your memeing needs.

As always, thanks for the awesome support guys!

Work continues on Mordhau and we're making good progress towards beta and release, but unfortunately we're not quite there yet. We do not intend to rush things, but since we promised early access to Beta backers by January, we are letting the Beta backers into the melee-focused Mordhau Alpha. If you are a beta backer, you will receive an email from us shortly with instructions on how to get your Steam key. Our actual Beta and Release dates will unfortunately have to shift a bit further into 2018 to make sure we can deliver content with an adequate attention to detail and polish. We will keep you updated on the matter!

We are also releasing some of the backer rewards that can now be claimed, and we have also begun collecting input for the personalized rewards. For those of you who backed at the corresponding tiers, you will see your rewards listed in the account tab on our website, and you will be able to fill out the input for personalized rewards there as well.

And finally, check out some cool Alpha combat footage below, captured by community member Trix:

Let your friends know, too!

Many of you have been asking us what's up with our kickstarter campaign. We're still working diligently to get everything ready as soon as possible, but it's not there yet. Regrettably, we won't be able to hit 2016 as we'd have hoped. We know this is disappointing to some of you, and we apologize for missing our mark. This is in part due to some delays on our part, in part due to December rearing its ugly head, with holidays and spending sprees that would invariably take away attention from the campaign. Put simply, we've only got one chance to do this right, and we don't want to blow it -- and we know you don't want us to, either. The campaign is coming, and we'll keep you updated, but we'll let you know once we're 100% sure we can hit a specific date.

Among other things we've been working on a new environment to show off, this one's a larger map with a small village and a castle (not in view), and a cozy little stream.

A catapult which you can push around the map, to find that perfect spot to rain destruction from. Or just be an ass and drive it off a cliff.

And some prototyping work on character aging. Just another thing you can customize. Here's how it looks inbetween:
