As for queue times increasing, you could always allow people to queue for multiple tiers at the same time rather than forcing them into one queue only. With that said, I really don't want a 5v5 LTS. The gigantic deathball in the center is not the type of competitive play I prefer. We've tried that back in Chivalry and without an objective, it turns into a long stalemate. I want organized, strategic competitive play that is based on objective play. I mean sure it's easy to point at our current preconceived notions of team objective from Chivalry and point to the flaws, but if we look at objective-based competitive play in other games like Overwatch, Counterstrike, and many others, surely we can find a solution that works.
Hey everyone. I would like to take a minute to talk about competitive play and the future of it in Mordhau. Like some of you, I am a competitive player at heart. What that means to me is when I play games, I typically want to play them competitively. It's what I enjoy most in gaming. I've been hearing about how the competitive scene will look for Mordhau and I have a couple of concerns I'd like to run by you.
1.) Team sizes.
Officially, on release, I hear the game will support 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3 ranked queuing. First off, this is brilliant. I want to take a second and congratulate the developers on bringing this to our community. The concern of mine, however, falls with team sizing. There would be no queuing for 5v5 or higher (6v6, 8v8, and the like). Personally, I want larger team battles and I want them as easily as queuing. Having played Chivalry, Counterstrike, and more competitively, finding a scrim sucks. It's entirely reliant on you personally knowing anyone and everyone who is willing to scrim so you can message them. A new team would find it hard to get involved in this process, having to add people to friends list, message all of them, wait for responses. It's simply not fun. And when we take a look at queuing right there in arms reach, we can't help but be envious and wish to have the same capability.
2.) Official support.
32vs32 dynamic objective play WILL BE AMAZING. Hands down, that is a huge selling point for me. But, we won't have that type of gameplay for smaller teams. You will not be able to play 8v8, 6v6, 5v5 on that game mode. The maps will be too large to support it. I can tell you that even typing that last sentence makes me sad. Skirmish (SKM) is fun, don't get me wrong. But as many of us have seen, 5v5 or 6v6 skirmish (last team standing) isn't quite as fun competitively. This is why there was a drastic switch in tournaments in Chivalry to move from Last Team Standing to Team Objective. Yes, I want the 32vs32 dynamic objective play. I really want that. But I also want to be able to play that gamemode competitively, with smaller team sizes (5v5, 6v6, and 8v8).
3.) A spectator sport.
The first thought that anyone should have when they think of competitive play is how they watch it. Spectator support right now is limited to those who can join the lobby. This takes up server slots and puts them in the actual game. I think to fully capitalize on the matchmaking ladders and ranked play, more developed spectator tools are required. A way to have the general public see that a competitive game is being played and watch that game with some sort of delay. Examples of tools like this would be how League of Legends does it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqT14k6BsC0). This is what will take the game to the next level in terms of competitive play. Watching on twitch is nice, but having the power to freely spectate, switch player views, and move around the map on your own is huge.
