There's a general air of negativity in the Mordhau community right now, and I don't believe it's because people don't like the game anymore. I think it's simply because there's not a whole lot going on right now to energize the community and get people excited. At launch, the community was full of life - content creators were pumping out content, people were talking about the game, discussing builds, load outs, map balance, etc. Now much of that has faded away and what's left is a passionate community of players that feel like they're being left out in the cold.

Contrary to statements I've made in the past, I don't believe anyone at Triternion holds any ill will towards the community or has any malicious intent. I believe this is simply a case of a fresh new development getting thrust into a limelight they weren't prepared for and essentially being caught out like a deer in headlights. I don't think anyone, backers or developers, anticipated the game getting as much press as it did. A fall off in player numbers was inevitable - 11 people just isn't enough manpower to maintain a community of 60k concurrent players. With that said, there's a lot Triternion could do to keep the current player base loyal and maybe even grow the community over time (I can't see Mordhau being a 40k-60k player game, but 10k players? I think that's doable).

Weekly dev blogs
This is a simple one that goes a long way towards keeping people interested. People love seeing new stuff in the works, even if it's still work in progress. Tell us what you've been up to the last week, what the progress on new content is, maybe post some screenshots of WIP models or maps. During July, you guys should have been posting blogs telling us how ranked duels were coming along. It's a simple thing, but it goes a long way towards maintaining a loyal player base.

Public test servers
I think the recent feedback on invasion indicates a very serious need for something like this. When something is pushed to the live build, folks expect it to be finished and tested. Invasion felt rushed and undercooked. Give major updates like new game modes and new maps time to simmer on a test server before pushing it to the production build. People will be a lot more willing to give useful feedback and less likely to lose trust in the development team if new stuff goes to a test server first, because everyone is going in with the expectation that there will be issues and that this content isn't fully fleshed out. Not to mention it gives us something to look forward to because hey, getting to play around with new stuff is always cool, even if it's just for testing.

Community events
I understand a lot of things may not be feasible since everyone at Triternion works remotely, but things like 'play with the devs' nights, discussions that give players a direct line to the developers, etc. are a great way to touch base with your community. People like to interact with the developers. Adding a human element by interacting directly with players makes people feel like they're being heard, that someone on the other end cares.

Modding
Let's face it, most indie developers don't have the resources to maintain large player bases outside of some exceptions. Almost every successful indie game I know of allows modding. An SDK can breathe so much life into a community. It helps to fill in the gaps between content drops.

I want to say to the folks at Triternion that even though our criticisms can be pretty vicious, it's only because people want this game to succeed. Nobody hates the game or the developers. You have an army of nerds chomping at the bit for a chance to contribute to this community and help it grow. Help us help you help us all.

I've spent months bitching out the developers, specifically how bad the servers in the US were, throw ridiculous amounts of shade on them and probably dissuading at least a few people from buying. You know what I just discovered?

The region in my fucking Steam settings was set to a state more than 1,000 miles from my house. I don't know how - maybe it got reset after a Steam client update or something. Changed it to US - Columbus which is less than half the distance... my ping is half of what it was before and I'm no longer losing packets anywhere near as badly as before (it still happens but it doesn't break the game like it did before).

I'm just gonna go bash my head against the wall for a few hours and then throw my computer in the garbage. Clearly I'm too stupid to be messing with this stuff. For god's sake, I'm majoring in computer science right now and yet I couldn't think to do something as basic as check my region settings. All those stupid fucking rants because I was too much of a moron to do the equivalent of checking if my device was on. I'm just gonna delete my forum account while I'm at it. I've made you all listen to my stupidity for too long. Holy fuck am I embarrassed.

If Triternion was committed to this game's future, there would be action, not words.

Despite getting ragged on this for more than 2 years, Triternion is still shite at communication.

Instead of small updates and hotfixes to tide people over between large updates, we're just stuck with a broken game until the fabled patchie comes (if it's even being worked on). Tripwire got a lot of flak for this when Killing Floor 2 was in early access. You know what they did?

They started releasing weekly dev diaries showcasing what they were working on and dropping small patches here and there to address community complaints in between large content updates. They actioned the feedback they got from the community and the game and its community were better off for it in the long run.
(At least, until they back stabbed all their fans this year by making Chivalry 2 a timed Epic store exclusive, but I digress.)

You have one of two options:
1) Man the fuck up, admit mistakes were made, and actually make a genuine effort to improve if you have any investment in this game's future.
2) Just admit you don't care about the game or its community anymore because you're all filthy rich now. Then I can quit gaming forever because I've been lied to and ripped off by so many developers now that I'm completely jaded, cynical, and don't trust anyone.

Mordhau is a dead game. You'd be committing career suicide by committing to it 100%.

This community isn't anywhere near large enough to support a ranked mode. It's a colossal waste of resources.

i'm pretty new to this genre but anything with a high skill cap i see as a challenge to overcome — but if mordhau is the best this genre can do then that's insanely sad, cause i too can see the potential of these mechanics weighted with actual good game design. i still have hope for the mod support though, it'll be this games second wind when it comes to exploring the actual mechanics to see what game design best suits it

Mod tools aren't coming. The game will be abandoned long before we ever get an SDK.

maybe. i hope not though, i don't actually think the devs lost all their passion for this game once their massive paychecks rolled in. theres still a lot of their personal time sunk into this game project and you never really lose passion for that

Money changes people. Anyone in their position would just sell the company off to the first buyer and enjoy their early retirement.

The fact that you are a selfish c*nt doesn't mean you have reason to believe every other person is. If you have this little faith in anyone or anything why bother, if you had a passion project that suddenly made you money would that sole fact stop you from doing what you love? It's not like this game was some shit that was pushed out of the uterus of some sad dev company belonging to EA that don't give a fuck.

Most developers are selfish c*nts. Considering how many developers I used to love have betrayed their fans in 2019, I just assume they're all future EAs in training unless they prove otherwise.

Yes, I'm extremely jaded, because I've been lied to, ripped off, and screwed over by game developers one too many times.

Your loss. The game is one of the best pvp games in years.

Yup. It's so good it lost 90% of its players in 4 months and probably won't survive the new year.

Unless you're playing competitively who cares. There's no elo or anything you lose if your team loses, and the other team probably has their own players fucking around as well. Just have fun

And now we know why 90% of frontline matches are one sided stomps.

Imagine being upset about a poor update for 4 months, when there are those who sat through kickstarter and alpha development for over 2 years lmao

Pointing out that the developers have always been terrible at communicating does not suddenly excuse all their current and future behavior.

I would think they'd learn their lesson after having it beat into their heads over 2 years of alpha, but here we are 4 months after release, with 90% player loss and zero signs of life from the developers. I'm sick and fucking tired of being taken for a ride by developers.

Ranked mode would have been good at launch when there were 60k players. Now there's less than 10% of that.

You don't have the player count to support a ranked mode anymore. Just forget about it.

We obviously care about the game and we're working on updates,
if we wanted to jump ship with the money we wouldn't be making big updates and working super hard on content and features.

Actions speak louder than words. I haven't seen a single acknowledgement about the awful US servers. They've been awful for 4 months and it's starting to become difficult to find matches even at peak hours because - surprise - people are getting fed up with the atrocious servers and are quitting the game.

Then there's this:

@Jax said:
Mm to clarify, maps may or may not make it with the ranked update, it depends on where the maps are at progress wise and when everything else is ready.

I can see it being 50/50 whether or not it comes in one big update or two smaller ones, but if the latter happens the maps definitely won't have as long of a wait as it's been since the last patch to now.

Essentially, we don't want to hold back an update if it's possible, as there's no real reason to keep ranked from coming if it's ready and the maps aren't, but the maps are very close to being done, so we'll see what happens.

EDIT: Not everything is coming that was in the update, SDK is a long term goal that isn't going to be ready for a while.

Christ, it's Insurgency Sandstorm all over again. Wait months on end for a big update only for that update to be a massive disappointment and drive tons of players away.

Maybe it's the bad reputation that many early access games have. Anyway, I'm sure they're pretty worked up, they might want or need a break soon or already have. They basically finished a game, not polished but finished. Give them a break, like literally. In German we use the term "unthankful", as customers, we should be happy there's a working game for most of us at least.
We shouldn't call the game dead since that is probably the last thing the devs like to read, especially if your comment has no trace of constructive criticism or subject matter.

To all the people who want their money back they might think twice when they see this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjgZ8AXQXxk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6gosy2_ZNw

And this isn't the only example of developers that ripped off their staff and players.

Take that 'be thankful' bullshit and stuff it. I've had to deal with fried potato servers for 4 months now without a single acknowledgement from the developers. It would literally take a day to switch server providers, they just won't do it.

Damn right I'm a pessimistic fuck because Triternion has thoroughly worn out my patience. If you were in the US and had to put up with these potato servers while everyone else was having a fine experience, you'd be frustrated too.

yeah man haha if only I was in the US man sure is great not being in the US lol xD

Jesus Christ you're just one of the most toxic edge lords on this forum, just a complete insult to anyone. Further making people who want to see this game succeed just get turned away by people like you, further killing whats left of the community with your online cool edgy guy asshole persona.

yeah man i'm the asshole, not the angry creature assuming i'm some europoor monkey lmao

The hell are you talking about? US servers in this game are notoriously awful and have been for months. I'm not assuming a goddamn thing about you. I don't care where you live. I'm saying you'd have a very different opinion of the game if you were one of the unlucky ones that has had to put up with fried potato servers for the past 4 months.

When there are reasons to be optimistic, when real positive change starts happening, then the pessimism will go away.
