My one issue with spears at the moment is that they can do "backwards slashes" (I don't know the name for it). It's when the player misses you with an overhead slash (and stabs, it seems), missing you slightly, and then they can correct their mistake by hitting you on their way back, pulling the weapon into you. The mechanic makes sense to me with sword weapons but with spears it feels like an abuse. You have missed me, I have closed the distance, but you get a retry on your pull-back.

Hey guys and galls,

I haven't seen much talk about builds. What do you run?

My preferred one is:
Perks: Friendly(1)
Armor: 1/2/0
Zweihander (11)
Medic Pack (2)

Friendly for obvious reason. A bit light on armor side to remain quick. The Zweihander™ for reach and damage.
I rely on being relatively quick, with good timing to land those two-handed swings.

What do you like best?

during a frontier Taiga fight I seem to have stabbed an enemy through a tree (see video below). We were both surprised by it :)

Mordhau was added to the latest version of GeForce Experience, so maybe try that app to optimize your graphical settings.

Another thing that might help is going into Nvidia Control Panel -> Mange 3D Settings -> Program Settings -> [find or add Mordhau] -> set Maximum pre-rendered frames to 1

I don't think that the developers want to make a Chivalry clone, they are doing their own thing. I believe it's more about all of us trying to come up with creative solutions that would please both the people who think that shields need a rework and those who think they are just fine (I know it sound impossible :D )

In my opinion shields shouldn't be negated by a simple move, or they lose all purpose. But having them be a "foobar" strategy that works for all and in all circumstances might be sub-optimal. So, how could shields serve as protectors of the back line and at the same time not be a hold-one-button-I-win-this strategy?

I think it's about what function the developer and us, the players, see the shield having in the game. It seems unreasonable to me that a crouched kite shield user can hold off multiple attackers at bay almost indefinitely. Especially if the shield user has a wall to their back. Up until now I've heard a couple of suggestions on how to address this:

  • blocking with shield drains stamina
  • destructible shields
  • bullhooks pulling the shield of the player
  • stabs past the shield
  • having a narrower angle at witch the shield is guaranteed to block all incoming attacks
  • kicks flatarse the shield user, or at least stagger them

It's obvious that the shield is a sore point for a big portion of the player base. What could be changed to satisfy the most players?

Hi,

to me it feels that spears are a bit to easy to use. They kinda act like a ginormous longsword; a ginosword. They absolutely should have the range advantage over other weapons, and should be the ideal poker for defending/pushing choke points, but they should suffer in close range situations. I am most annoyed that they do not have an "ineffective zone". To me it feels that if I face-hug a spear user I should be able to win the 1v1 quickly, but they tend to swiss-cheeze me about half the time (yes, I'm a noob). In tight spaces, like tunnels or indoors, it would make sense to me that the butt of the spear would also hit surroundings and limit the spear use which would then open the player to be shish-kebabed by shorter weapons, by the short spear for example. Of course all of this is just my opinion :)

The "ineffective zone" could also be applied to other weapons such a the Zweihander; unless you switch to alternative grip.

About "The Heater shield and the Pavise shield", other ways to address the issue could be:

  • making the shields destructible (probably difficult to implement and balance)
  • drain (lots of?)stamina on block, which should prevent players to simply turtle in a corner
  • shield disarming techniques; a series of kicks seems reasonable
