Marox says over "3000" of us? Kickstarter says 4375. Did 1000 people or more renege on their kickstarter promise?

But 4375 is over 3000, is it not? I suppose it is close enough to gain insight on the number of alpha people.

There are 2801 alpha keys + the number of people that backed on the webshop before it was removed, which would probably be a little over 3000 keys. The rest were all beta and below.

Steam servers are notoriously bad for anything except Counter-strike Global Offensive, and even then those are debatable. It also takes a decent amount of time to integrate SteamWorks API into any game not on the Source engine, remember Chivalry's browser? Horrendous. Also, the problem that is most likely holding up the alpha is not a critical game bug, as revisions through source control should be available to re-stabilize the build and avoid players using hot code. Dedicated server load and multiplayer optimizations are most likely necessary to the release as no one could play without them.

Regarding the multiplayer optimizations I have a very bad feeling.
All the game that recently are on market with unreal engine 4 use only 1 core and regarding the unreal engine 4 with a "massive multiplayer" look for Squad.

Are you sure it's because of UE itself, and not C++?

Unfortunately I check some of the new games made with Unreal Engine 4 on gamegpu.com (where they made a cores test) and the results are the same in terms of cores using (1 core work at 80/90/100) and in terms of performance depends on the game (for example Hellblade and Gears of War 4) runs decently because they are mainly "closed" but if you take Playerunknown's Battlegrounds or Squad (that count a large number of player on a big map) the results are

http://gamegpu.com/action-/-fps-/-tps/hellblade-senua-s-sacrifice-test-gpu-cpu

http://gamegpu.com/mmorpg-/-%D0%BE%D0%BD%D0%BB%D0%B0%D0%B9%D0%BD-%D0%B8%D0%B3%D1%80%D1%8B/playerunknown-s-battlegrounds-test-gpu-cpu

http://gamegpu.com/action-/-fps-/-tps/unreal-tournament-test-gpu.html

http://gamegpu.com/action-/-fps-/-tps/gears-of-war-4-test-gpu

for comparison.
the witcher 3 with a homemade engine have a good use of CPU:

http://gamegpu.com/rpg/%D1%80%D0%BE%D0%BB%D0%B5%D0%B2%D1%8B%D0%B5/the-witcher-trilogiya-test-gpu-cpu

and also crysis 3 (that is 4 years old):

http://gamegpu.com/action-/-fps-/-tps/crysis-3-2013-retro-test-gpu-cpu

Actually on Squad is a bad situation in my opinion, people continue to open 40vs.40 servers because the idea of mass play are exciting but the performance issued (even on high-end PC) are the team says that once improved the animation system the things should get better but I think that if the game ask a lot of resources and the engine don't use all the PC resources things will not get a lot better than now.

This game share different things with Squad (new team, massive battle, same engine) but even if I had some bad feeling in general I have a good feeling for this game for a few reasons:

  • this is not a modern shooting game, so big maps for vehicle and shooting at distance are not necessary;
  • the maximum number of player is 64, not 100 (that help a lot)

On a 40vs.40 player map a person with a high end PC run it badly.

If the game is cpu limited it would be very disappointing tbh. And 1 core only is a total joke. I will wait March to see if buying a graphic card for this game is useful at all.

Keep up the good work team!

Could we have an average framerate with 64 bots on a game to give an early idea? And a framerate with few people on the game? (1080p / medium graphics of course)

Welcome to the new era of PC games where new game using 1 core at 100 % and the other at 20 % (maximum 40%):

http://gamegpu.com/mmorpg-/-%D0%BE%D0%BD%D0%BB%D0%B0%D0%B9%D0%BD-%D0%B8%D0%B3%D1%80%D1%8B/playerunknown-s-battlegrounds-test-gpu-cpu

http://gamegpu.com/rpg/%D1%80%D0%BE%D0%BB%D0%B5%D0%B2%D1%8B%D0%B5/kingdom-come-deliverance-beta-test-gpu-cpu

and game from 2013 run like this:

http://gamegpu.com/action-/-fps-/-tps/crysis-3-2013-retro-test-gpu-cpu

But, as I write to Carlo_Mano, this game share different things with Squad (new team, massive battle, same engine) but even if I had some bad feeling in general I have a good feeling for this game for a few reasons:

on Squad on a 25vs.25 player server (a good server) I could stay on 75/80 FPS
For better understanding, my rig is:

CPU: I5 -5820k stock clocks
GPU: ASUS 980 Ti Strix
RAM: 32GB DDR4
Res: 1920x1080

I guess well have to ask the devs, because the UE4 threaded optimisation relies a lot on the coding :/

We can all cross the finger but I don't think devs could do a lot regarding this problem, of course I don't know they're ability with coding and programming but it seems that is a problem that start from engine itself.
In fact, even Unreal Tournament and Paragon (that are made by the creator of Unreal Engine 4, Epic Games) don't use all the core equally (or it's better to say, they don't do the parallelism ?):

http://gamegpu.com/action-/-fps-/-tps/unreal-tournament-test-gpu.html

http://gamegpu.com/mmorpg-/-%D0%BE%D0%BD%D0%BB%D0%B0%D0%B9%D0%BD-%D0%B8%D0%B3%D1%80%D1%8B/paragon-test-gpu

but, even with that limit it seems that those games (I try Unreal Tournament free version but not Paragon) run "well" in FPS terms (of course they can run better if they use all the PC resource, especially on low/medium machine maybe).
To the people that read this:

  • I bought the Mercenary key (alpha) and I still believe in this project (more than I believed in Deliverance kingdom come, as a backer that ask a refund after understanding that the game was technically consoles oriented and PC gamers are always a good way to raise money, http://i.imgur.com/So6wnDM.jpg?1);

  • If you have a medium machine and you get a low amount of FPS don't listen immediatly to people who say "you need to upgrade your rig" or "you need to overclock it", first check if all the game you have runs bad, then check if you have made a correct installation, then wait for at least 3 updates; UE4 games receive benefit form high clock CPU, it's true, but there is a limit also to overclock and it's benefit (besides the fact that you don't know how good is your CPU so maybe you can't overclock it over a frequency).

  • I don't think delays is a problem, PC market is full of mediocre games released before the time, I think they call it AAA games.
    Especially delays of some weeks, calm down please;

  • Don't blame at first the dev's for shit performance (if this should occur);

To the dev's that read this:

  • Please don't take my multiple post regarding the Unreal Engine 4 problem as a big pile of shit on this this game;

Man... some of you are waaayyyyy too whiney.

At least try to be understanding, most of you have no idea of what processes they are having to take to get everything running well enough for alpha. They are probably trying to make sure the servers are going to work.

anyways, keep up the good work Devs, everything I've seen so far looks amazing.

I Hear this for every fucking time they delay. But the thing is they LITERALLY delay all the dates they've set. Personally I would had liked to know before we all got super excited and planned for it

I want to point out they have not set a single date. They have only given estimations and warned they may not be accurate.

This is good enough.
For comparison on 40vs.40 player server on a 3.1 km² map.

You are angry because you have misunderstood the situation. You did not pay to play the game early. You donated. The developers must delay it because they need more time to create it. It is not that the game is finished but the developers are too lazy to release it.
