Some armor thoughts.

I've been thinking about what types of armor to use in this game, and I had some questions.

For one, is armor going to be symmetrical? Do we get the choice to wear one pauldron on the left shoulder and a different one on the right? Can we wear a single glove like a duelist?

Also, how limited will armor be to Central/Western European styles? I'm a pretty big Byzantine Empire fanboy and I'd like to see this kind of stuff:

byz cata.jpg

Finally, will we be able to show signs of wear on our armor, or can we change the color to something darker? I'd rather it looked like my gear has seen fighting and that I wasn't some silly knight in shining armor trope.

I'm sure as long as it's in the Europe/Middle Eastern area it'll be in the game, so no Samurai armor. You can change the color of your armor but idk if wear and tear is an option

I'd hope that finishes range in a rough order from unfinished, painted, slight polish, satin polish, mirror polish, blueing, polished black, russeting, patina, engraving, trim, gilding, etc. and also worn or damaged variants. Hopefully some of these could be applied by just using the tint system i.e. blueing and different levels of polish, others could unfortunately be a little more labor intensive for the devs...

Perhaps you could have armor variants - Damaged, Worn, Unfinished, Painted, Standard, Polished, Mirror-Polished, Russeted, etc. and the be able to tint those?
So then you could do a blue-black mirror polish, or paint your sallet a specific set of colors.

For those categories, some tints wouldn't be available, so russeted armor could range from red-orangish to brown, and also requiring you to unlock different tints per variant, so you might have standard armor in blue-black, but not polished or gold-trimmed black.

P.S. sorry for derailing the thread XD

P.S.S (or is it P.P.S.):

How is team ID gonna work? IMHO the ez way (and best too) is to allow all sorts of armor types and tints but require a tabard or other torso item to be colored specifically. So if you're not wearing a tabard, maybe allow stuff like brigandines to be colored all pretty... also look at them shoes

For the most part, it's symmetrical for performance reasons, but letting you not wear something on one side wouldn't affect that, so for things like gloves and pauldrons we could make a toggle option to show/hide one side (obviously not for things like boots).

Also, how limited will armor be to Central/Western European styles? I'm a pretty big Byzantine Empire fanboy and I'd like to see this kind of stuff:

Eastern stuff like that would be in as well, just not oriental stuff.

Finally, will we be able to show signs of wear on our armor, or can we change the color to something darker? I'd rather it looked like my gear has seen fighting and that I wasn't some silly knight in shining armor trope.

We're taking some steps to ensure we can do something along these lines, but we'll see how exactly things turn out later on.

Probably the best way would be to restrict significant pieces to team colors, and leave the smaller ones up to the player.

Nah dude, it should be pretty high up there but there's some crazy shit that royalty had. This stuff should be the stuff that you see like twice a week.

there is a great documentation about english fashion armor

in the elizabethan era every royal dude who wanted to be a swagger had to have a nice looking armor
oh boy the armor smiths got rich at that time

some of your pics are from that time

I've been thinking high level players should be able to get some kind of nice patterning or gold accents on their armor as they rank up.

I think that armour progression should be done like:
1- Standard level armour, boring af who cares
2- Colouring for the main plates without much attention to detail (same goes for chainmail and leather clothes if you lack style)
3- Add extra colouring to the sides etc as a secondary colour
4- engravings and detailing like my homeboy Jax showed
5- Weird trinket shit for helmets and that kinda stuff

Tabards'n'shit are separate, along with the other customisation options (eg. being naked)
