Mordhau

Mordhau isn't doing as well as some of you might think, devs, time to wake up?

Mordhau is going down hill. I only just checked the statistics, but they were merely a confirmation of my expectations. I tried to play Skirmish earlier today, only to find a total of three servers, of which only one had decent ping and happened to be full.

People have been criticizing the lack of communication from the developers since the very start and despite everything that happened fuck all has changed. Surely now would be the time to wake up, before the game actually dies? When I started playing many of my Warband friends joined me, I actually have 93 friends on steam who own Mordhau, yet I only see like 3 to 5 of them still playing it.

Facts.png

It has been stated a million times before, the combat mechanics are great, however, they're being very poorly supported by the gamemodes and maps. That, in combination with poor patches (Crossroads, wtf?) and a lack of communication, is really strangling this game to death.

I know the devs are working on more maps and a competitive mode, but please, start communicating properly and hire some damn people if you can't handle the amount of work, because if you don't do so in time, this game will fail.

Don't get me wrong, I post this not because I like to be negative, but because I actually enjoy the combat so much that I would hate to see this game die.

Oh and I hate javelins why did u add those wtf

The game is doing fine. Do you people have any sense of proportion? Holding relatively steady at 10k players is ridiculously good for a multiplayer title as niche as this one.

That being said, the rest of your post is on point. Extremely slow updates, understandable or not, are really letting the game stagnate and the almost complete lack of (official) communication is inexcusable as far as i'm concerned. Quit playing ARMA 3 and drowning yourself in IPAs Jax and write something up to post in the announcements tab weekly or some shit. I know Crush barely speaks English and is prone to flip out and gamble everyone around him, but that's what you signed up for.

or you could make me admin and let me do it

Yeah, pretty much. Would be a shame if this game fades.

I think the playerbase is doing alright, but everything else, yes. We need more transparency from the devs. At this point I'd rather them prioritize getting the game to play good over maps. Everything was fine on launch but there's been a serious drop in server quality and quantity. I get random crashes now that don't even let me go into task manager, I just have to sit and wait 2-5 minutes after closing it in the task bar, and every game I join I get awful ping and lag, and that isn't just me. I should not be joining an LA server in Oregon and get 100-200 ping.

While I do agree that one should see things in proportion, I also think that given the attention it received much more was possible, in terms of playerbase. It was an opportunity that the devs missed for the reasons I and many others (possibly including yourself given the amount of posts you have) have stated.

It is not necessarily bad to have a smaller playerbase, a decline is also to be expected given how many players there were at the start, but I think it's much worse than it could and should have been and I disagree when you say that 'the game is doing fine', given the amount of people that have clearly decided that Mordhau is not for them and the fact that this afternoon there were only three servers of a specific gamemode, meaning that people are already being forced to play specific gamemodes because there's a lack of players (at times). The game is still fairly young too, so naturally it will only get worse - unless the devs step up their game of course.

Yeah they missed their chance at a mainstream breakthrough, but there's not much they can do about it now. The hard pill to swallow is that Chiv/Mordhau's combat platform just doesn't appeal to a vast majority of players. 1v1 won't bring back many players since it's a niche format no matter what game. Mordhau's best bet was AT RELEASE to have had a 6v6 TO game mode with ranked, Frontline was a massive mistake and utter failure I think. It's basically all the worst parts of Mordhau in one turd package.

If there wasn't the massive novelty of being a medieval sword fighting game, if you were to judge Mordhau objectively, it was released as a very barebones and incomplete product. The product of being too hyper focused on the combat system, while ignoring other things around it that make a successful game. Right now the competitive Mordhau scene doesn't even have a proper game mode to scrim/play because there just isn't one aside from Skirm, and Skirm is boring and one dimensional.

I think everything everyone else has said is true, but how hard this game is, definitely pushes people away. So much more could have been done for sure, but everyone I've gotten to play the game gets bored by how bad they are. That's just the kind of game it is though. Matchmaking for other modes would definitely help though.

It's not too late. Devs should put out a planned content and features videos, or at least a written post with some images, to maintain what's left of the initial hype and keep people curious about upcoming stuff in Mordhau. Restate the obvious, reiterate what's already known, it doesn't matter: just whet the appetites. It's something any of the devs could easily throw together in an afternoon and it would make a significant difference for Mordhau's future.

What kind of support or future content do you think a fledgling populations is going to get?

It's been said before but a way within the game to pair bored veterans with low level noobs for 20-30 minute coaching sessions would cement a new stream of players joining the game. This will help your average noob feel like the game isn't designed to feed them into a meat grinder for the pleasures of vets which is a comment I see a lot. I personally get a case of the guilt at best when I kill someone who doesn't know the basics of the game.

Like many I showed my room mate the game, he thought it was cool but sucked and wanted to quit so I spent some time in the duel yard calling out all my shots and then calling out the shot + the manipulation before I did it, ie overhand drag, left accel, etc. He picked it all up in no time and plays every day now. Hopefully the 1v1 mode will create the bulk of the coding infrastructure required to set up a tutor mode too.

To all of you who keep saying the player base isn't dropping, OP linked an image with proof. Also I've noticed this as well, game has pretty much died for me as I live in Canada and can only play late at night. At around 2-6am there is only one or maybe 2 servers running in LA now, where as a month ago I there were around 3-5. I've seen it down to just one server running in LA with about 15-20 people in it.

Personally I think they really really need to hurry up with ranked mode. Game feels so casual I don't think currently many people even care win or lose. Ranked mode gets the adrenaline pumping and keeps people clicking "play again".

Why does it seem like every game I like is a sinking ship?

LawBreakers - I don't want to talk about it. Just glad I didn't spend money on this.
Paragon - Killed by Fortnite.
Unreal Tournament - Killed by Fortnite.
Insurgency Sandstorm - Terrible launch.
Quake Champions - Terrible launch, awful microtransactions.

Whatever. Guess I can add this to my growing list of games I liked but nobody else did.

I 100% agree that frontline is the worst parts of everything in mordhau and is a terrible game mode, honestly the fact that its pushed as the "main" gamemode on the menu and in videos is probably why people are turning away from the game
I spend all my time in this game on duels and sometimes on br if I'm bored, or horde for some gold

During the Alpha it could take up to 3 months between each updates (The "Patchie" crisis), and of course without any news / sign of life to get our teeth into.

A ten year old game with multiple modern competitors has 4x the people playing...

I would really appreciate if the devs made official posts. Due to having a JOB I can't exactly watch a livestream for a video game for 4 hours a day. I guess I could if the livestreams actually happened when I was home but they don't, and seeing what is on my end complete and total lack of interaction from the devs is a little disheartening.

I don't need specifics, or weekly "sup bitches," I just want something, ANYTHING from the devs stating their short term goals for the month. Some big thing about design milestones, achievements, setbacks, planned and coming soon tee em would really be appreciated. From what I've heard Jax does talk a good bit on stream but again, ain't nobody got time for dat.
